Guidelines for Scientific Integrity, Second Edition

September 2002

There has been increasing confusion and uncertainty regarding such issues of scientific integrity as authorship, ownership of data, students' rights, and others. The technology explosion and the emphasis on multidisciplinary research are two catalysts for this increased questioning. These two elements create a blur in disciplinary lines and familiar patterns. The Midwest Nursing Research Society (MNRS) is pleased to provide these guidelines for scientific integrity to help nurse researchers in these times of increasing complexity.

MNRS is committed to provide a climate within which its members can develop professionally and have opportunities to support and nurture one another. These guidelines are designed to promote the highest standards in science and career development. MNRS members are encouraged to refer to these guidelines as they participate in multidisciplinary research projects and serve as mentors for graduate students and new investigators.

The Midwest Nursing Research Society aims to anticipate the future and to provide opportunities for its members to debate and clarify thorny issues in science. As science and society evolve and new knowledge and insights are gained, these guidelines for scientific integrity will be revised and updated.
