Every year, the Midwest Nursing Research Society presents awards to selected members of the Society who have made significant and notable contributions to the field of nursing through research.
This year, the nominations will be completed online. Please see below for the individual requirements for each award.

MNRS/John A. Hartford Foundation Award for Leadership in Geriatric Nursing Research
The purpose of this award is to recognize MNRS members who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in geriatric nursing science, and who have impacted quality of care for older adults in the MNRS region through their scholarship and mentorship. The recipient(s) of this award will have conducted research that has guided and improved geriatric nursing practice and/or promoted science-based education in geriatric nursing. This award was first bestowed in 2001.
Eligibility Requirements:
Nominees for the MNRS/John A. Hartford Foundation Award for Leadership in Geriatric Nursing Research must be regular members of MNRS in good standing and be nominated according to the process outlined. Research teams are eligible in addition to individuals.
Nominations will be evaluated of the following criteria:
- Contributions to geriatric nursing research
- Has research enhanced the science and/or practice of geriatric nursing
Nomination information should include:
- NIH Biosketch (limited to 4 pages only)
- 100-word narrative summary statement about the applicants accomplishments and/or contributions to geriatric nursing that describes how the applicant’s research has enhanced the science and/or practice of geriatric nursing
- Two letters of support that detail aspects of the nominee's leadership in geriatric nursing, as outlined in the purpose statement above
The individual(s) selected will attend the Annual Conference and receive a plaque and a cash award during the awards ceremony.

Distinguished Service Award
The Distinguished Service Award recognizes an MNRS member who has demonstrated dedicated service and an untiring commitment of furthering the development of the organization and its members. This service has been demonstrated through donated time, influential leadership and sustained service to MNRS.
Eligibility Requirements:
Nominees for this award must be members of MNRS for a minimum of 10 years.
Nominations will be evaluated of the following criteria:
- Service to MNRS
- Demonstration of leadership
- Accomplishments/contributions to MNRS
Nomination information should include:
- NIH Biosketch (limited to 4 pages only)
- 100-word narrative summary statement about the applicants accomplishments and/or contributions
- Two letters of support that detail the nominee's significant contribution

Lifetime Achievement Award
The Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes an MNRS member who has significantly advanced the profession of nursing either through an extensive program of research or creation of environments where research can flourish, and whose distinguished career yielded outstanding and noteworthy accomplishments.
Eligibility Requirements:
Nominees for this award must be regular or retired members of MNRS in good standing.
Nominations will be evaluated of the following criteria:
- Significance of contributions to nursing science
- Scope and quality of career accomplishments supporting research
- Extent of recognition as a mentor of nurse scientists and/or facilitator of nursing science
Nomination information should include:
- Full Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- 100-word narrative summary statement about the applicants accomplishments and/or contributions
- Two letters of support that detail the nominee's significant contribution

Distinguished Contribution Award
The purpose of the Distinguished Contribution Award is to recognize the contribution of a member who has conducted or promoted research, which has enhanced the science and practice of nursing in the MNRS region.
Eligibility Requirements:
Nominees must be members of MNRS in good standing, have an earned doctorate and be nominated according to the established procedure. Nominees must agree to attend the Annual Conference and give a presentation at the Awards Ceremony.
Nominations will be evaluated of the following criteria:
- Program of research: Quality and scope
- Research-related dissemination record
- Overall impact of research program on the profession
- Impact of research in the Midwest
- Influence on nursing research advancement and career development within the profession
- Breadth and depth of overall research contribution
Nomination information should include:
- Full Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- 100-word narrative summary statement about the applicants accomplishments and/or contributions
- Two letters of support that detail the nominee's significant contribution
- Two published research articles

Harriet H. Werley New Investigator Award
The purpose of the Harriet H. Werley New Investigator Award is to recognize the contribution of a new investigator who has conducted nursing research that has the potential to enhance the science and practice of nursing.
Eligibility Requirements:
Nominees must be members of MNRS in good standing and be nominated according to the established procedure. Nominees must agree to attend the Annual Conference and the Awards Ceremony. Nominees hold an earned doctorate and has completed his or her doctorate within the past 7 years. The research should have been started within 5 years of completing the last formal research training and may not consist solely of dissertation research.
Nominations will be evaluated of the following criteria:
- Quality and rigor of major research projects
- Research-related publication and presentation record
- Significance of research to the profession
- Potential as a career nursing scientist
- Actual and potential influence of research on nursing and healthcare practice or systems
Nomination information should include:
- NIH Biosketch (limited to 4 pages only)
- 100 word narrative summary statement about the applicants accomplishments and/or contributions
- Two letters of support that detail the nominee's significant contribution
- Two published research articles

MNRS Senior Scientist Award
The Senior Scientist Recognition Program provides recognition by peers for members’ scholarly achievements, mentorship, and service and represents the highest class of membership. This new program recognizes that there are many outstanding researchers whose accomplishments are noteworthy and vital to building the knowledge base in nursing, yet are not recognized regionally or nationally for their work.
Individuals may self-nominate or be nominated by a peer.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Current regular or retired member of MNRS
Applications will be evaluated of the following criteria:
- Clearly defined area(s) of scholarship
- National and international recognition of scholarship
- Sustained record of federal or foundation level funding at R01 or equivalent level
- Sustained record of research publication in top tier journals
- Evidence of mentorship
- Record of scholarly service to the discipline

Application submission has been extended to December 1, 2011.
Individuals applying for Senior Scientist status will receive notification in February. Senior Scientists will be recognized at the Annual Conference and receive an award at the Business Meeting. They will also be recognized in a special section on the MNRS website. Senior Scientist status will remain throughout MNRS membership.
We are excited to bring you this recognition program to honor our many outstanding researchers.
Selection Process
Nominations must be uploaded online by December 1, 2011. The MNRS Awards Committee reviews the nominations according to the criteria and makes recommendations to the Board for final approval. The Selection Sub-Committees for each award is comprised of a chair, who may be a board member, and three past award recipients who are MNRS members in good standing.
