The purpose of the Health Systems, Policy and Informatics RIG is to support, encourage, and improve the quality of nursing research in the areas of health systems, information technology, policy, and quality and safety.

Examples of health systems research include administration, management, leadership, implementation and evaluation of best practices. Examples of policy research includes: policy development, implementation and adherence at the local and national levels, as well as effective use of data in the public policy process. Topics related to information and technology include knowledge management, IT application and evaluation, as well as IT utilization for educational and training purposes. Examples of quality and safety topics include performance measures, sustainable interventions and practices, and innovative research methodologies. 

*The topics noted above are not all inclusive, rather examples of research areas included in the new research interest group. 

Who Should Join?

  • Anyone with an interest in Health Systems, Policy, and/or Informatics.
  • Students, practitioners, faculty, and scientists at any level are encouraged to join.  


  • Networking: Provide a network to exchange novel/emerging methods, approaches to study, and the development of new knowledge to guide nursing research in health systems, information technology, policy, and quality and safety.
  • Knowledge: Explore novel/emerging methods, approaches to study, and the development of new knowledge to guide nursing research in health systems, information technology, policy, and quality and safety.
  • Practice: Draw upon and build stronger evidence to make informed healthcare decisions and highlight the importance of translating and disseminating health systems, policy, and informatics research to impact nursing leadership, clinical nursing, and federal and state policy makers.

The Health Systems, Policy & Informatics RIG hosted the following webinar: Twitter Boot Camp for Nurse Researchers: Engaging Social Media to Enhance Research Communications. The webinar covered the basics of how to set-up a twitter account, how to make posts, hashtags, and examples of how you can promote your scholarship. The presenters were: Dr. Rhonda Schoville, PhD, RN; Mr. David Jerkins, BS, BSN, RN; and Ms. Kathy Dunnuck, BFA, BSN, RN from the University of Michigan Health System.

Welcome our Co-Chairs 2017-2018 

Said K. Abusalem, PhD, RN

Said is an Associate Professor at the University of Louisville, School of Nursing. He teaches fundamentals of Nursing, geriatrics, leadership and management and global health. His research interests are:
• EHR implementation and improved clinical outcomes.
• Predictors of Pneumonia and Influenza vaccination programs in Nursing Homes.
• Nursing and healthcare outcomes in long-term care.
• Patient/resident safety in long-term care.
• Improving safety culture and nurses response to care error.
• Nurse/Patient satisfaction and other outcomes in long term care.
Said's research has specifically focused on patient safety, reducing infections, hand hygiene, consumer value purchasing, nurse sensitive measures, patient satisfaction, and practice care errors.

Karen Dunn Lopez, PhD, MPH

Karen is an Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois College of Nursing. Karen's research uses a variety of methods to focus on overcoming healthcare information technology barriers, including poor usability, with the goal of improving patient outcomes. This research has included:
• An integrative review of clinical decision supports for hospital nurses that found decision aids for nurses improved patient outcomes, healthcare processes, and have high usability.
• An analysis of numeracy and graph literacy in practicing nurses whose findings suggest the need to consider both factors when presenting numerical information in clinical information displays to improve efficiency and accuracy in decision making.
• A systematic review of usability measures that appraised the generalizability, usability attribute coverage and quality of the measures.
• Quasi-experimental study of meaningful use electronic health record system implementation on clinicians' perceptions of usability and cognitive workload over a 36-month period that showed sustained long lasting perceptions of increased cognitive workload.

• A cognitive work analysis of patient falls on inpatient units that found the physical work environment, alarms, and workflow impede the nurses' abilities to prevent falls.
• A mixed methods study of communication technology to support nurse-physician communication on medical, surgical units that found both benefits and unintended consequences of communication technologies that informed opportunities for redesign.
• In addition, she has worked with large interdisciplinary teams with engineering specialties that 1) Used nursing documentation data to develop and test clinical decision support for nurses using user center design methods and 2) Use natural language generation to automatically generate patient centered discharge summaries and instructions derived from physician and nursing documentation.
In addition to her research activities, she teaches Quality, Safety and Health Information Technology in the DNP program and Literature Review Methods in the PhD program.

Member in the Spotlight

Jessica Castner, PhD RN FAEN

Jessica Castner is a Fellow in the Academy of Emergency Nursing, a recognition she received for pioneering the integration of environmental health research with emergency nursing expertise. She earned her PhD in Nursing from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Master’s in Public Health Nursing from the University of Missouri-Columbia, and Bachelor’s in Nursing from Marquette University. 

Dr. Castner’s research focuses on reducing the human health risks from environmental and occupational exposures related to asthma and cardiopulmonary outcomes. Her impact and contributions to the science revolve around four interconnected themes of air quality, mhealth tools for respiratory and environmental exposure monitoring, unscheduled healthcare utilization, and healthy work environments. Dr. Castner’s recent accolades include the 2015-2017 Rockefeller University Heilbrunn Family Center for Research Nursing Nurse Scholar, 2017 Marquette University College of Nursing Young Alumni of the Year, and 2017 Nursing Outlook Excellence in Research Award. She is a board-certified emergency nurse (CEN), with additional clinical certifications as an Asthma Educator (AE-C), Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) Provider and Instructor, and Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course (ENPC) Provider. Dr. Castner’s research trajectory began at the University at Buffalo where she has been privileged to serve as lead faculty in the Environmental Health Study of Western New York. 

Dr. Castner’s service has included Associate Editor and editorial board for the Journal of Emergency Nursing, and co-chair of the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments Research Work Group (2016-present), and co-chair of the Midwest Nursing Research Society’s Health Services, Policy, and Informatics Research Interest Group (2015-2016). Dr. Castner has led initiatives to institute best-practice conflict resolution, overcome barriers for women in science, advance diversity and inclusion, and enhance cultural competence for the combat veteran family. Dr. Castner looks forward to integrating her skills and experience with the priorities and initiatives of the assembly membership and leadership.

Distinguished Scholar: Dana Tschannen, University of Michigan

Dr. Tschannen's professional and academic career focuses on advancing the science of quality and patient safety through the application of technology and clinical information. Dr. Tschannen's scholarly expertise and activities include:
• Improving Interprofessional communication through the application of Crew Resource Management Principles
• Development of a Predictive Model for Pressure Injury Development
• Use of virtual Simulation in education and clinical practice
• Implementing Evidence-based practice to improve nurse sensitive indicators
• Development and Evaluation of Evidence-based practice and quality improvement projects


Dissertation Award: Marilyn Shepherd, PhD, RN, MBA, CNE, CDE, CWOCN, Blessing-Rieman College of Nursing & Health Sciences

Dr. Shepherd's dissertation focused on "Information Technology in prediction of Rapid Response Episodes, Pressure Ulcer Status and 30-Day Readmission" in adult medical-surgical patients.
